Dr. Henry Omoregie Egharevba, Director (Research) & Head of Department, Department of Medicinal Plant Research and Traditional Medicine

Henry Omoregie Egharevba PhD, is the Director (Research) & Head of Department, Department of Medicinal Plant Research and Traditional Medicine. He started his early career in the 1990s, first as a Production Chemist in charge of the synthesis and production of textile dyestuffs at the Century Dyes & Chemicals Ltd., and later as a Marketing Executive for sourcing and sales of pharmaceutical and allied chemical products at Ibachem (Ibafon Chemicals) Ltd. He later joined the service of NIPRD as a Research Fellow and rose through the ranks to become an Associate Research Professor of Phytochemistry in 2016, and a Research Director in 2024.

Dr. Egharevba holds a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Biochemistry from the University of Benin, after winning the academic prize for the best student in Biochemistry in 1990/91 academic session. He also holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Analytical Chemistry and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Abuja, a M.Sc. Public Health from the University of Suffolk, UK, an MBA (Marketing) from Lagos State University, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from the National Teachers’ Institute Kaduna.

His work as a pharmaceutical and public health scientist over the last two decades has focused on translational and operational health research. He has worked extensively on the development of Nigerian medicinal plants as Herbal Medicines and phytodrugs in the management of tropical diseases. His work in phytochemistry and pharmacognosy has contributed immensely to the development of monographs in regional Pharmacopoeias. Dr. Egharevba is an expert in African Traditional Medicine governance and translational health research, with a strong inclination to Regional Biosecurity, One Health, Global health, and evidence-based Public health practice. He was the Institute representative at the Presidential Task-force on COIVD-19, and Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19. He is currently supporting the R&D efforts for national medicine security through the Presidential Initiative on Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC).

Dr. Egharevba has mentored many young scientists in chemistry- and biology-related courses/projects at undergraduate and graduate levels. At various times between 2012 and 2025, he was a visiting lecturer, project supervisor, and external examiner at the Nasarawa State University Keffi, Nile University of Nigeria, University of Abuja, Veritas University Abuja, and Kogi State University, Anyigba.

Dr. Egharevba has over 100 research publications in peer-reviewed journals of international repute, and has published several scientific book chapters. His work has been cited more than 2800 times by research scientists in over 100 countries, and has a Google Scholar h-index and i10-index of 22 and 42, respectively. He is a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (FCSN), a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (FICCON), a Senior Career Member of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (NSBMB), and a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, where he is currently an elected member of the Chemistry-Biology Interface Community (CBIC) Council and a member of the Research Fund Decision Panel.
